Newborn foals lack antibodies against infections. It is not until the foal is 3-5 weeks old that it can produce enough antibodies itself. To build a healthy bridge over this gap, antibodies from the mare's colostrum are needed.
If a foal has not received colostrum from its mother, or has not received enough, it is essential to provide colostrum as soon as possible in another way. Antibodies can only pass through the intestinal wall within the foal's first day of life. The uptake of antibodies is excellent within the first 12 hours after birth, but falls to minimal levels after 24 hours. Pavo Colostrum is specially developed for this purpose.
